The Colors of Life

The Colors of Life

Think of your life as a river…. ever changing as it flows. Sometimes it will be a slow and smooth, while other times it will feel like raging waters with rapids so treacherous that even the most skilled rafters would not dare to step foot in. Whether fast or slow, it continues to flow. Nothing will stop it, and before you know it, it will reach its final destination and you can’t turn back.

We can’t necessarily change, nor should we try to change, how the obstacles or mountains come at us in life. But, we can embrace them … and view those obstacles as stepping-stones in shaping us.

It’s during these times that we tend to forget the colors around us. We are so engrossed in our current situation (good or bad) that we fail to see God’s divine nature that surrounds us. Too many times I have become the product of my own environment, taking for granted all of the true beauty that is right out my back door. I get caught up in busyness of life and forget to appreciate the color of the leaves or the sounds of nature around me. I get so caught up in life that even a peaceful winter snow can only cause havoc on me.

Paint with Colors

But those colors of life don’t just stop in the natural objects in our lives. Those colors are painted in our friends, in our family, or in the cashier that just rang up your grocery bill.   They exist in the poor and the rich. They exist in our homes and our places of work.   They exist whether you are in the pits of despair or at the pinnacle of your life.

So, before your river reaches its final destination here on earth, take a moment to step on the shoreline and away from your routines. Take a moment each day to truly appreciate all that surrounds you, and use those colors of life to bring out the true character in your heart. By doing so, you too will become the color of beauty that others are depending on you to become. It’s up to us to color our rivers of life and to do in His Almighty name.

You must rid yourselves of things such as anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language. Put to death lust, evil desires, and greed and color yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” – Colossians 3: 5-12 (author paraphrase)
